Our Vision
We are optimists who embrace the future rather than dwell on the past.
We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment and create a better world. An economy that restores and maintains balance with ecosystems is the only viable future for humanity.
OUR MISSION
We craft incredibly desirable garments that make people feel good, whilst pioneering new ways of doing business that show how we can live well within planetary boundaries. We restore balance between humanity and the natural world.
Where others seek volume, we seek harmony.
Planetary Boundaries
One of our guiding principles is to follow science. Science gives us an invaluable opportunity: Foresight to understand the relationship between our economic model and the erosion of earth systems. Modern economies are destabilising our life support systems. Novel entities (harmful chemicals, including plastics), are an unfathomable mess up. The biosphere (all the living things on Earth) is collapsing, with species going extinct at an alarming rate. Climate change doesn’t need an introduction anymore. These are wicked problems that are difficult to solve. But there is nothing we can’t do if we put our minds to it. Where there is a will, there is a way. At Wide Open World, we don’t wait for governments to act. We pioneer new ways of doing business. Ways that show how to operate in the green. Within the safe operating space. There is a market for orange. We are better than this. We follow Natropy's APres model, built from the planetary boundaries framework, to achieve real, absolute sustainability. Because for us, sustainability is a non-negotiable concept.
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES
OUR MISSION: RESTORE BALANCE
We are the first company in the world to use an absolute sustainability framework.
Sustainability isn't just a buzzword for us—it's a promise to maintain balance and stability in the world we share. Environmental sustainability is not a measure of intensity or impact, it is a measure of the stability of the environment.
Using Natropy's APres model, we aim for 100% sustainability meaning we strive towards maintaining an ecological balance for every product we create. Join us in our mission to preserve our planet.
Notes on the APres evaluation score:
- The APres sustainable model (Adaptive Planetary Resilience Exchange System) is a visionary model developed by Natropy based on the Planetary Boundaries model. It will be released in 2024 and be subject to peer-review feedback. The model is therefore bound to change and improve with time.
- The evaluation scores provided are against the initial release of the APres model. Two variables have not been evaluated yet (freshwater N&P and Freshwater score) and will be done as soon as is reasonably practicable.
- For greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), we measure our emissions from cradle to grave (scope 1, 2 and 3) for each product (we only display the average GHG emissions on the APres score). The main factors impacting our footprint are 1. the farming system, 2. yarn production, 3. transportation, and 4. how many times customers wash the garments per year. For carbon offsets, the APres model recommends investing in nature-based solutions as close to the ecoregions where businesses operate. Furthermore, because our supply chain is still responsible for the combustion of fossil fuels (about half our total GHG emissions), a shield with a negative sign is displayed on the Atmospheric metric (which would be the case for most businesses on Earth). Nature-based sequestration cannot compensate for fossil fuel emissions because of permanence. APres takes a systemic and holistic approach to the fossil fuel problem prioritising responsible land-use practices and taxing emissions through the use of carbon offsets. Thus nature-based sequestration is accounted for only when the land system score has reached 100%. Don't be fooled by "Net Zero" slogans. The only acceptable goal: leave fossil fuels in the ground.
- We will publish a presentation of our evaluation against the APres model during our first year trading and after peer-review feedback.
The Tasmanian Land Conservancy
We support the Tasmanian Land Conservancy to protect natural ecosystems. We hope we can inspire other businesses to put environmental conservation organisations as a central part of their business models. As it should be.
